In an interview with BBC Radio 2, producer Cameron Macintosh has this morning announced the revival of Lionel Bart's Oliver! at the Gielgud Theatre later this year.
Directed and choreographed by Matthew Bourne, who previously restaged the show with Macintosh in 1994 and later in 2009, the production will run at Chichester Festival Theatre this July before transferring to London's West End in December.
With set design by Lez Brotherston (New Adventures, RSC, Old Vic), Macintosh says that "having staged the largest production of Oliver! ever, we want to return to the scale of the brilliant original with a more intimate production... Lionel’s irresistible adaptation of Dickens classic story, with its legendary score packed with ‘tunes glorious tunes’ will, we hope, have audiences ‘considering themselves our mate’."
The cast includes Billy Jenkins as the Artful Dodger, Simon Lipkin as Fagin, Shanay Holmes as Nancy, and Aaron Sidwell as Bill Sykes with further casting to be announced.
Director and Choreographer Bourne said "I was lucky enough to work closely with Lionel on the 1994 revival... and hope to do him and Oliver! proud in 2024.”
