It's no secret that one of the West End's busiest times of year is the summer; with flocks of tourists coming from all over the country, and globe, tens of thousands of theatregoers bundle into London's best auditoriums every night. And yet, this August seems to be a busy month of 'get-outs' with a whopping 12 West End shows taking their final bows before the schools go back.

Joining the likes of A View From The Bridge, Romeo and Juliet, Standing at the Sky's Edge, and 2:22, here's a list of some of the top West End shows that are dropping their curtain in August.

Your Lie In April - 11th August

Originally set to close in September, Your Lie in April has announced early closure. Based on one of Japan's best-selling manga novels, Your Lie in April is a true romance that blends the worlds of classical and musical theatre together.

Kosei Arima is the perfect piano prodigy dubbed the “Human Metronome” for his mechanical accuracy who has won many prestigious competitions, but he loses his ability to hear music following the death of his mother. Can his friendship with violinist Kaori Miyazono help him return to playing the music he loves?

Don't miss your chance to catch Your Lie in April before it closes. Tickets start from £15 and can be booked here.

Spirited Away - 24th August

Another musical based on an original Japanese work, Spirited Away is currently playing at the London Coliseum. However, unlike Your Lie in April, Spirited Away will not be closing its doors early; infact, Spirited Away was so eagerly anticipated as a West End Musical that the production's run was extended before it had even opened, adding 5 additional weeks of performances.

A masterpiece of storytelling and stunning visuals Spirited Away, tells the enchanting tale of Chihiro who while traveling to a new home with her family, stumbles into a world of fantastic spirits ruled over by the sorceress Yubaba. When her parents are turned into pigs and she is put to work in a magical bathhouse, Chihiro must use her wits to survive in this strange new place, find a way to free her parents, and return to the normal world.

Premium seats are still available via the theatre's website, and at The Revue we suspect this will not be the last London's West End see's of Spirited Away...

Shrek the Musical - 31st August

Currently concluding a UK Tour at Hammersmith's Eventim Apollo, Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire's Shrek the Musical brings the classic Dreamworks movie to life on stage.

Join Shrek and Donkey on their daring quest to rescue the feisty Princess Fiona. Meet a fire-breathing Dragon, a Gingerbread man with attitude, Pinocchio and a whole bunch of fairy tale misfits who'll leave you in stitches.

Tickets for Shrek the Musical start from £24 are available here. You can also check out our review of Shrek the Musical here.

Sister Act - 31st August

Containing a whole host of stars, Sister Act tells the story of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier who witnesses a crime and is hidden away in a convent for her safety. She initially clashes with the rigid lifestyle of the nuns but soon breathes new life into the choir, bringing joy, laughter, and a whole lot of soul to the convent.

With Alexandra Burke, Leslie Joseph, Lemar, Lee Mead, Lizzie Bea, and Carl Mullaney, Sister Act is a toe-tapping, heart-warming, love-spreading musical that'll have you raising your voice in no time.

With tickets starting from £25, you can book Sister Act here and make sure to check out our 4-star review.

Also set to close on 31st August, Two Strangers is the latest West End hit that we expect we may not have seen the last of.

In Two Strangers, we meet Robin and Dougal - soon to be related - who are preparing for a wedding of their respective family members. They aren't a likely duo, and as Dougal, who's main frame of NY reference is Home Alone 2, tries to use his time in New York to rekindle his lost relationship with his father, Robin is too busy to stop and see things from his perspective. But 36 hours is a long time in a city that never sleeps.

Starring Dear Evan Hansen stars Sam Tutty and Dujonna Gift, Two Strangers transferred from London's Kiln Theatre to the West End's Criterion Theatre in 2024. Check out our 5-star review here and make sure to book yourself a ticket while you still have a chance. Tickets start from £18.

As well as these shows, London will also be waving goodbye to West End shows People, Places and Things on August 10th, A Chorus Line on August 25th, and Farm Hall on August 31st.

Whilst it may seem a dark time for London Theatre, we currently have 6 shows announced to open in September, including The Rocky Horror Show and Waiting for Godot (starring Ben Whishaw).
